September 8th

Today, this day was a brimming cup,
today, this day was the immense wave,
today, it was all the earth.

Today the stormy sea
lifted us in a kiss
so high that we trembled
in a lightning flash
and, tied, we went down
to sink without untwining.

Today our bodies became vast,
they grew to the edge of the world
and rolled melting
into a single drop
of wax or meteor.

Between you and me a new door opened
and someone, still faceless,
was waiting for us there.

Your new sub-heading is a good one, Andrew. I like it!
In line with Calyptorhynchus comment (to your earlier article):

    “Pugna vomitna victi sumus”

(Apologies to Livy, but translation is: “In a battle, a vomitous battle, we were defeated.” - “vomitous”: see T. Abbott for creation and C.Pyne for definition)

Still, it may be simply the ALP's Dunkirk. The war is not over.

Have a look at Tony Abbott's victory speech. He now says that in three years the carbon tax will be gone, that the boats will be stopped, the budget will be on track for a believable surplus and the roads of the twenty-first century will be under-way. So his promises are not going to happen from day one as he originally said and the surplus will only be “believable” and “on track”. Sounds like all those promises are backtracking already.

As always, however, Tony Abbott will give us plenty of laughs. He claimed to be both proud and humble, two opposites at the same time.

    1. Voter Bentleigh, he is going to give us the ALP agenda! What a fibber. No one will notice though. infuriating.

Andrew I love your new heading although you may need to refresh it every five years.

I know you have written about the Senate but maybe there is some fresh colour and movement there and whether there is any real possibility of a double dissolution. I nearly wrote double disillusion which, of course, is another topic. Could we explore Clive's big wallet and what it has meant for Bob Katter who must be feeling very poor today.

Anyway I think it would be fun to explore Abbott's earnest pledge to enact the Labor agenda. The scoundrel.

I would also welcome a whither goest the ALP piece which would involve the first election of a party leader by party members, all 7 of them.

  2. Andrew,

You have been one of several 5th estaters who have helped me keep a fingernail grasp on sanity over the past few years - my eternal gratitude.

Write whatever whenever. It will be read, savoured, appreciated.

If you are feeling empty (as I am), it's the effect of being gutted.

My best wishes to you, and again, my thanks.

  6. my son told me not to worry it s will all unravel, my husband said well it already has a boat turned up so he hasn't stopped the boats, lol they have decided not to tell us when boats arrive, how stupid they are, , why tell us they are not going to tell us. then we wouldn't know they are not going to tell us, lol well now it sack 12 th Canberra gov workers, so if they have spouses that 24 and if they have children its even more, so if the folks leave who buy the 12 homes, lol do you kmow what I am starting to look forward to this, as now they have no one to blame but them selves Rupert cannot hide the 12 canberians, and their families who are out of work, he cannot hide the folks dying on hospital trollies because of money taken out of the health system and so the list will go on sadly though I am grieving for the children who have lost their chances of better education, and the nbn for the researchers , on the abc sat, morning I read and I cried the research in to the bionic eye is to get no more funding what sort of people do that, tonys world is different to our world but then he is the one that is supposed to be the Christian,, lets ridicule them when we can and think how they treated jg we labor people would never sink to their level but on the other hand are we to polite

  7. The election result is disappointing, but not surprising.

The incomong Senate is going to be ... interesting ... for Abbott to manage. He's got to get agreement (probably, on current trends) from two PUPs, a DLP, a Family Fist, an LDP (who wants everyone in Western Sydney tooled up as it'll make the streets safer, and who'll probably start demanding we return to the gold standard), a Motoring Enthusiast and an Australian Sports person.

As well as that, Clive Palmer looks set to provide a lot of entertainment during Question Time.

I may not have to stay drunk for the next three years after all.

  8. As the village idiot said, "Sh*t happens!"

The fight continues. Not only will the comedians have plenty of material. There is plenty of material out there for umpteen books, blogs, reviews, PhDs...all about how Oz has been conned. The task is, of course, to minimise the damage which might be wrought by this incoming toxic, incompetent, divided and lying government.

Your precise analyses of media idiocy must continue. Nil caborundum...

Thank you. Your knowledge of the Liberal party, its members and its workings, your capacity to explain subtleties of the political system, and your skill for forensic deconstruction of the writings of some of the more egregious journalists have combined with your passion for competent government in this country to produce a mini course for your readers which has been much appreciated.

      Spot On!!

I hope the Sky news alumni still read this clever and interesting blog

Mr Abbott is going to be scrutinised to death and the thinking public will keep their hawkish eye on them all!!

      God Bless The Greens!!

  10. Please keep writing, you're analysis was a delight to read and there is still hope that Sophie will bite the dust. A battle lost, well time to clean out the mess and face the world again. I thought Plibersek was all class last night and Tony has already begun hedging his promises. I suppose it is too much to expect the MSM to take him to task. We'll have to wait until Rupert moves on.
